In the last week, Mother Nature has shown us her temperament. Days of blistery cold -35°C weather leaves us thinking that our food selection is limited in regards to locally sourced products. But, nothing could be further from the truth. Ottawa has six amazing restaurants that will be using locally produced ingredients that haven’t suffered from winter’s wrath during Savour Ottawa Winter Tables.
For the next two weeks, between February 16 and February 29, 2016, Savour Ottawa is “putting the spotlight on local food from Savour Ottawa farmers and producers in local restaurants”.
The initiative celebrates the availability of local food in winter, as well as the talents of local chefs!
Savour Ottawa Coordinator, Trevor Haché, expressed his passion for the winter event by saying “Even in the dead of winter, there is all sorts of local food available, despite some people sometimes thinking that there is no local food available in the winter”.
Haché explained that the local restaurants participating will showcase “the talented chefs using local vegetables, grains, meat and cheese to create tasty meals we should all try to find some time to enjoy”.
Restaurants have told us that the end of February can sometimes be a slow time for them, now that Winterlude is over, so we are working with them to encourage people to taste local now.
To participate, the restaurants had the choice to either create a table d’hôte/ fixed price menu featuring locally grown and raised food (i.e. bought from a Savour Ottawa farmer/producer) and/or organize a special meal, event, or tasting celebrating Savour Ottawa products.
Each restaurant’s menu for Savour Ottawa Winter Tables can been seen in detail by clicking on their menu provided below:

And The Food Tease wouldn’t be a tease without tempting you first. The Fairmont Château Laurier graciously provided us with their delectable menu items showcasing local vendors and products.
During the summer, I had the pleasure of attending Savour’s Harvest Table 2015 and I was spoiled with the food that was presented before me. Delicious meals created by local chefs using products locally sourced by vendors were nothing short of amazing.
With that being said, I am pleased to announce that Savour Ottawa is offering a free e-cookbook of the delicious meals that were offered to the Harvest Table guests. Sourced not only with information on the local producers/vendors and the talented chefs that participated in the event, but completed with the recipes that allow you to replicate the same meals.

So regardless of what Mother Nature throws at us, make an effort to enjoy the local meals created by chefs who care about where their food is coming from and care about their vendors. It’s a win-win affair!
