Ottawa Is Taking Mixology To A New Level!

Gone are the days where a cocktail was just a cocktail. Today, we see an exciting new surge of enthusiasm regarding mixology. Much like a chef in the kitchen, these barchefs are taking cocktail making to a whole new level!

We are seeing talented bartenders displaying their innovative skills in the most unique manner ever when making their tasty and mind-blowing libations! Much like culinary competitions, there are now mixology competitions for bartenders to show off their creativity and spirit savviness.

Our very own city, Ottawa, will be hosting the regional finals of Canada’s largest mixology competition, MadeWithLove.

Ottawa will be seeing 16 barchefs from our neighbouring bars and restaurants compete for the crown of Ottawa’s BEST Barchef for 2017 !!

MadeWithLove is an annual event that allows guests to discover what their city’s craft cocktail scene has to offer. And believe me, Ottawa’s barchefs are something else. They have become a force to be reckoned with!

MadeWithLove organizers explained that the competition has been running since 2009 and is now the biggest mixology competition in Canada. They started to run the events in the biggest cities, but then approached some smaller ones starting with Halifax, Winnipeg, and then Calgary.

“We love hosting the regional finals in smaller cities as it really helps to grow the cocktail culture. Ottawa was ready to have its own regional finals. We had many registrations from the bartenders who wanted to compete and the bar where we hosted the qualifiers was full of supporters. Of course, the Ottawa regional finals has its place among the other cities in Canada and it will be part from now on in our national tour.”

JUDGES’ CHOICE WINNER:

Cocktails will be judged on their originality, creativity, and taste. Judges will look for passion, expert knowledge, distinct ingredients and the way competitors incorporate these elements in their cocktail creation. The bartender who will be attributed the most points will go on to the National Finals in May 2017 and will have a chance to win one of 10 trips to one of the MADE WITH LOVE’s affiliated distilleries.

PUBLIC’S CHOICE WINNER:

Every guest will receive a «dogtag» necklace. After having tasted the competitors’ cocktails, the guests will have to give their «dogtag» to their favorite Barchef. The bartender who will have collected the most necklaces will also be eligible to the National Finals in May 2017 and will have a chance to win one of 10 trips to one of the MADE WITH LOVE’s affiliated distilleries.

The two crowned winners of each category, People’s Choice and Jury’s Choice, will represent Ottawa at the National Finals taking place in Montreal in May 2017.

Tickets: $65 (pre-sale) at each participating bar or $75 at the door.

Tickets include a full tasting of all competing cocktails & delectable food-pairings, affiliated showcase cocktails & foods as well as having the opportunity to vote for the public’s choice winner. 19 years+ // Non-refundable.

A couple of evenings ago, I had the pleasure and honour of being invited by my alma mater, @lecordonbleuottawa to witness Chef @antonyannick70 be awarded France's L'Ordre du mérite agricole, the highest civilian honour from the embassy @franceaucanada 😃

This distinction recognizes the contributions of Chef Yannick to promote French culture in Canada and Ottawa specifically - through his work as a chef and instructor at Le Cordon Bleu Institute in Ottawa. 

Special moments of the evening included Ambassador of France to Canada, Michel Miraillet sharing with guests the numerous accomplishments that Chef Yannick Anton has accomplished over the years. Simply remarkable!!👏👏
A very touching and inspiring moment came when Chef Yannick Anton gave praise and gratitude to his mentors, who helped him attain his dream in the culinary industry. He also reminded the graduating class of chefs to always have a vision and to never let it go.👨‍🍳👩🏼‍🍳😍

And it wouldn't be a celebration without some tasty treats that exude French flare! They even had chocolate graduation hats - very cute and apropo 🎓🎓
