What a great time of year it is, especially if you enjoy diverse activities and taking in the sights, sounds and flavours of Montreal, Quebec.
To kick start the summer, I had the pleasure of covering the world famous Montreal International Jazz Festival thanks to Montreal Tourism and to the festival’s coordinators. Working alongside Modern Mississauga Media, I took in various concerts, discovered new music genres, tasted some of Montreal’s iconic dishes and enjoyed some of the island’s landmarks as we toured around the city.
To say the Montreal International Jazz Festival is a big one is to put it mildly. We learned that “every year it features roughly 3,000 artists from 30-odd countries, more than 650 concerts (including 450 free outdoor performances), and welcomes close to 2.5 million visitors (34% of whom are tourists) as well as 400 accredited journalists”. Now those are some impressive figures!
This ten day event plays such an integral role to Montreal’s tourism, that the city closes down a major part of their downtown core in order to accommodate the outdoor shows. During our time covering the festival, we attended concerts in various formats: from being amongst a sea of thousands singing and dancing as we took in an impromptu Brazilian concert to listening to Grammy award-winning songstresses belt their tunes in large concert halls to being swept away by the sounds of a jazz-swing cabaret-style quintet in an intimate jazz club.
The time spent during the festival was one of sensory pleasure. With the various activities and concerts to take in, our time in Montreal flew by so quickly. To capture the vibe that we felt, I have listed below the activities that we covered in our articles.
An incredible time was had and we couldn’t have asked for a more diverse coverage of Montreal’s Jazz Festival.
Looking forward to next years’ lineup of concerts!
