Lazy Sunday’s…perfect day to eat what your heart yearns for!

I don’t know about rest of you but to me Sundays epitomize sleeping in and doing whatever I want whenever I want. Now, of course like many of you I have my weekend chores that need to get done. Laundry, cleaning and grocery shopping need to checked off on the ‘to do’ list but how I long for my lazy Sunday mornings. I love knowing that I will soon be deciding between rich and decadent meals for my Sunday treat…and yes I stress the word rich. Nothing completes a meal for me better than a rich meal. Sorry but even when I try to eat what is deemed by others to be “healthy”, I still need something sinful to complete it. Whether it be a rich sauce over a nice piece of lean meat, a beautifully cut fish fillet or a tantalizing calorie rich dressing over my greens…I need it. I NEED the richness!!

This past Sunday I decided to venture off and try a new eaterie for brunch and see how they would stand up to my “brunch expectations”. For some time now I wanted to try Stephen Beckta’s latest culinary project, Gezellig (www.gezelligdining.ca). What caught my eye reading their brunch menu was this new concept (or at least new to me anyway), that if you ordered any 2 brunch items you only pay $20 per person (I was informed that the portions remain the same regardless if you order the 2 brunch items or if you select one, so why not indulge for a couple of dollars more?) For a person like myself, who likes trying out various plates this concept was perfect. It was the most ideal way to see the depth of creativity that the chef possessed in order to please his patrons.

For Sunday brunch I typically lean towards eggs Benedict with a double order of Hollandaise sauce and God willing if I can twist the chefs arms…a beautiful Bearnaise sauce. A close second ‘go to’ brunch meal is steak and eggs and again with a side order of Bearnaise. Yes, I have a penchant for Bearnaise sauce but that’s an entire different story that I’ll one day share with you all. Since richness is what I seeked, richness is what I ordered. How could I possibly go wrong with a breakfast poutine (poached egg, pork belly, Hollandaise sauce, cheese curds and house-cut fries). This meal just oozed and epitomized a lazy Sunday…it was brunch perfection!

So, since my first plate was already selected I now had the dilemma of selecting another meal. Do I go ‘two for two’ on the rich scale and order another sinful dish (the devil on my shoulder was screaming “YES! YES! DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!!” Or do I select a lighter menu option that would finish off my brunch experience with a guilt-free lunch staple…a light salad served with a crispy coated fish cake? Well the healthy angel on my right shoulder won that round (just so you know, my horned mini me normally wins). But I must tell you the panko fried fish cake that was served with a anchovy caper sauce and salad was delicious. My only complaint was that the sauce was too scarce. Don’t get me wrong I’m not looking too drown my meals in the sauce but I would like to have the option of accompanying each forkful of whatever I am eating (in this case, it was the fish cake) with the sauce that was intended to accompany it. Nobody likes a tease in the sauce department…especially this Tease 😉

A couple of evenings ago, I had the pleasure and honour of being invited by my alma mater, @lecordonbleuottawa to witness Chef @antonyannick70 be awarded France's L'Ordre du mérite agricole, the highest civilian honour from the embassy @franceaucanada 😃

This distinction recognizes the contributions of Chef Yannick to promote French culture in Canada and Ottawa specifically - through his work as a chef and instructor at Le Cordon Bleu Institute in Ottawa. 

Special moments of the evening included Ambassador of France to Canada, Michel Miraillet sharing with guests the numerous accomplishments that Chef Yannick Anton has accomplished over the years. Simply remarkable!!👏👏
A very touching and inspiring moment came when Chef Yannick Anton gave praise and gratitude to his mentors, who helped him attain his dream in the culinary industry. He also reminded the graduating class of chefs to always have a vision and to never let it go.👨‍🍳👩🏼‍🍳😍

And it wouldn't be a celebration without some tasty treats that exude French flare! They even had chocolate graduation hats - very cute and apropo 🎓🎓
